Squirrel Friends Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitator Network
Core Values
- Commitment to Wildlife Rehabilitation
- We uphold the highest standards of wildlife rehabilitation, following established guidelines and ethical principles.
- We encourage all members to review and adhere to the Standards for Wildlife Rehabilitation set by the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) and the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC).
- Respect & Integrity
- We foster a culture of respect for wildlife, fellow rehabilitators, and the broader rehabilitation community.
- We recognize that wildlife rehabilitation is a shared responsibility and prioritize collaboration over competition.
- We do not tolerate bullying, slander, or unproductive conflicts, including those on social media.
- Collaboration & Support
- Our network consists of independent rehabilitators operating under the NC Wildlife Resource Commission.
- We extend across North Carolina, collaborating with various organizations to maximize our impact.
- We provide licensed rehabilitators with resources, supplies at cost, and acquire donated materials to support their efforts.
- Knowledge & Mentorship
- We actively participate in the apprenticeship learning process, understanding the importance of mentorship and shared knowledge.
- We support rehabilitators, mentors, and apprentices by assisting in pairing Apprentices with Mentors.
- While we provide resources, we are not an educational institution. We encourage continued learning through organizations such as the Wildlife Rehabilitators of North Carolina and their annual symposium.
- Ethical Release & Care
- We collaborate to ensure wildlife receives proper transportation, medical attention, and an optimal release environment.
- Our priority is always what is best for the animal, ensuring a responsible and ethical return to the wild.
- Professionalism & Advocacy
- We maintain professionalism and integrity in all interactions.
- While we acknowledge different approaches to rehabilitation, we refrain from defaming or discrediting others in the field.
- We strive to create a unified network of wildlife advocates dedicated to improving rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
- Volunteer-Driven Mission
- We are a dedicated volunteer network striving to enhance wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
- Our collective efforts aim to give wild animals the best chance at a successful return to their natural habitat.
