Rabbit Resource Page

North Carolina is home to three native rabbit species:
- Eastern cottontail (Sylvilagus floridanus): the most common rabbit, found throughout all counties of North Carolina from the coast to middle elevations up to about 4200 feet.
- Appalachian cottontail (Sylvilagus obscurus): restricted to higher elevations in western North Carolina and relatively uncommon.
- Marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris): a semi aquatic species dwelling in wetlands of the Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont areas such as the Falls Lake and Jordan Lake regions.
At Squirrel Friends Network, our dedicated rehabilitators also care for injured or orphaned rabbits alongside squirrels. To find someone near you, please visit our Locate page for a regional directory of rabbit rehabilitators. Remember that not all rehabilitators choose to publicly list their contact information, so if you do not see someone in your area, feel free to contact us and we will assist you further.
