Rabies Vector Species Resource Page

In North Carolina, certain wildlife species are classified as Rabies Vector Species (RVS) due to their potential to carry and transmit rabies. These include raccoons, foxes, bats, and skunks.

Because of the public health risk, rehabilitating RVS animals requires a special permit beyond the standard state wildlife rehabilitation license. This additional authorization is granted only to experienced rehabilitators who meet strict housing, safety, and vaccination protocols.

Not all rehabilitators are licensed to accept rabies vector species. However, some members of the Squirrel Friends Network do hold this special permit and are authorized to care for species like foxes, raccoons, and bats.
