Squirrel Resource Page

North Carolina is home to five native tree squirrel species:

  • Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis): the state mammal, found in all 100 counties from the Outer Banks to the mountains.
  • Fox squirrel (Sciurus niger): larger than the gray, this species inhabits the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, as well as northwest regions.
  • American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus): smaller and reddish, it lives in conifer-rich high elevations of the western mountains.
  • Southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans): nocturnal and widespread across the Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and up to 4500 to 5000 feet in the mountains.
  • Northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus): rare and restricted to higher peaks in western North Carolina.

At Squirrel Friends Network, our dedicated rehabilitators specialize in rescuing and caring for these diverse species. To connect with a wildlife rehabilitator near you, please visit the Locate page on our website, which offers a directory based on region. Keep in mind that not all rehabilitators opt to publicly list their contact information. If you cannot find someone locally, reach out to us and we will help connect you.
