How To Transport Wildlife
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO GIVE WATER AND DO NOT EVER GIVE WILDLIFE
PUPPY OR KITTEN FORMULA!!!
- THIS IS NOT THE CORRECT FOOD FOR THEM AND WILL CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD
- MOST OF THE ANIMALS TAKEN TO REHABBERS THAT HAVE BEEN FED BY FINDERS HAVE LIFE-THREATENING ISSUES LIKE ASPIRATION PNEUMONIA, DIARRHEA OR SEVERE MALNUTRITION.
- JUST LIKE DOMESTIC ANIMALS, WILDLIFE NEED TO GO THROUGH A TRANSITION PERIOD TO CHANGE THEIR DIET. THEY NEED TO BE PROPERLY TRANSITIONED FROM THEIR MOTHER’S MILK TO THE CORRECT REPLACEMENT FORMULA. GIVING THE INCORRECT FOOD WILL ONLY PROLONG THIS PROCESS.
THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO FOR WILDLIFE IN NEED IS TRANSPORT IT TO A LICENSED REHABILITATOR, OR A VETERINARIAN.
Transporting Wildlife:
- Keep them warm!!! You can place them in a box or a carrier with dry hand towel and if they are very young, a sock baby. To make a sock baby fill a sock with rice, tie off the end, and microwave for 30 seconds.
- Check for injuries. If they are injured tell the rehabber you are transporting to as they may need to go to the veterinarian they work with first.
- Secure the container, having loose wildlife in your vehicle while you are driving is not something you want.
